G.P.S.

For about a  century,  psychology in Georgia was part of philosophy. It became a separate discipline in the 19th century, with the publication of G. Kikodze’s book “The Bases of  Empirical Psychology”, the first psychological manual  used  in the Russian Empire (Georgia was a part of the Russian Empire then). Another book published in the 19th century, S. Dodashvili’s “Logic”, also discussed psychological issues.

Psychology was institutionalized in 1918, when D. Uznadze gave the third introductory lecture in the newly founded  Tbilisi University.  The title of his lecture was “Theoretical and practical interests of psychology. What does psychology study?”. D. Uznadze received psychological and philosophical education in Germany, under the guidance of W. Wundt.
